my dearest avalon,
As I sit at home in my rainy backyard — I am remembering our time together, suddenly filled with a bittersweet nostalgia that wraps around me like a tight hug. From the moment I set foot on your shores, I knew there was something special about you. Perhaps it’s your dreamy waters, where the hot california sun beats on your sparkling ripples of current or maybe it’s the way your cliffs stand tall & majestic, casting their shadow over the harbor below.
a place that I will be forever reminiscing about as contrasting, with your scorching rays that warm my skin & your icy waters that taught me to plunge fearlessly. Yet, it’s this very juxtaposition that makes you so enchanting, so utterly irresistible to an island girl who had the joy of meeting you. There is a magic in the air here — it’s undeniable.
time seems to stand still when I think about how I met Austy in California, & it took us so long to visit Catalina together. I learned later that he was saving it for a reason & every moment I can recall feels like a precious gift. It’s where he got scuba certified as a child, swimming through kelp forests & escaping from LA.
I adore your sleepy neighborhoods, your bustling cafes & boats everywhere you look. There is a richness to your streets, a tapestry of stories woven into the fabric of your shores. From the seabirds that soar overhead to the colorful garibaldis that dart just below the surface like firecrackers.
Catalina holds a special place in my heart, & I will be forever grateful for the inspiration we found for Avalon. Drawn by Austy, dreamt by me, it captures the essence of our time together, a homage to the beauty & magic of a little island town that I am still getting to know. Peacefully existing yet never afraid to stand out.
Thank you for allowing me in your space, even just for a short time. I hope we drew something you can be proud of. I can’t wait until we meet again 💛🩵
with aloha from every ounce of my heart,
tai

In the world of fashion, where you produce your clothing can be a controversial topic. There's often a stigma associated with certain countries and their manufacturing practices, and China, unfortunately, bears the brunt of this misconception. As the founder of a small swimwear brand, I've faced my fair share of these unfounded biases, which need some serious debunking.
It's essential to make a clear distinction between a small batch bikini factory and the large-scale manufacturing plants often associated with global tech giants like Apple. Small-scale, sustainable swimwear production is vastly different from the massive operations that churn out electronic gadgets on a colossal scale. The labor conditions, environmental impact, and overall work environment in these two sectors couldn't be more contrasting. So, when it comes to judging the ethics and sustainability of a brand's manufacturing location, it's crucial to look beyond stereotypes and consider the specific circumstances.
The Unfounded China Stigma:
It's disheartening to see how quickly some people write off any product made in China as inferior. Sure, there are fast fashion giants like SHEIN with questionable ethical practices, but they don't represent the entire manufacturing industry in China. To be frank, it's incredibly ignorant to assume that every manufacturer in a country of over a billion people shares the same practices. I could go on about China's rich history and evolving labor regulations, but I'd rather debunk this myth with a personal story.
My Experience: Racism and Retail
I once had a retailer reject my swimwear solely because some of it was made in China. In a shocking display of ignorance, they assumed that a product's quality and ethics were solely determined by its country of origin. It's a stark reminder of how pervasive these misconceptions are and how important it is to challenge them.
She texted me "No China in my stores".
I almost had to laugh. The very phone she just used to text me racist comments was manufactured in the place she claimed to never support. It was so backwards, but also eye opening.
In the diverse melting pot that is Hawaii, where cultures blend harmoniously, it's vital to acknowledge the significant Chinese population living here. It's a reminder of how diverse and multicultural the world is, and it can help us challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about China. In this unique and diverse environment, we understand the importance of respecting and appreciating the different cultural backgrounds that make up our vibrant community. We should not let stereotypes taint our perceptions of places and people we may not fully understand. Instead, let's strive for open-mindedness, acceptance, and respect for each other, no matter where we come from or where we're creating our products. Hawaii's cultural tapestry teaches us that there's always more than meets the eye, and it's worth getting to know each other beyond surface-level judgments.
The Hypocrisy in "Where It's Made" Questions:
It's amusing how some people are quick to ask about where a product is made, all while they're busy typing on their iPhones (made in China), lounging on their Target furniture (also made in China), and ordering boxes from Amazon every day (you guessed it, all from China). The irony is undeniable. We seem to pick and choose what's acceptable to buy from China, often overlooking the origin of our daily essentials.
The Bali & USA Paradox:
On the flip side, there's a paradoxical admiration for brands manufacturing in Bali. While it's a beautiful place with a rich culture, not every Bali-made brand is ethical and eco-friendly. Tai Swim Co is proud to manufacture in Bali, but it took a very long time to find a facility that was up to our standards. With little to no regulation, there are hidden sweatshops, and many aren't as tightly regulated as you'd think. It's not where you make your product; it's how you make it that matters. My close friend who also manufactures in Bali shared som sentiments with me when she last went to visit in Fabruary 2024. She share with me that in the winter, entire beaches are covered in plastic. Is the beached cleaned up? No. Pounds and pounds of plastic are merely swept up into mountains for tourists to avoid during the day -- just to be washed away at night again & the process repeated.
The Reality of Manufacturing in China:
The truth is, China is home to some of the world's strictest regulations on manufacturing. With a strong emphasis on quality and ethical practices, they've come a long way. Workers in China enjoy reasonable working hours, with almost all factories in the country taking month-long vacations during Chinese New Year. Lunch breaks are in well-lit rooms with air conditioning, and they don't work on weekends. They work a regular 9-5, just like us.
So you might be reading all this thinking we're not telling the whole side of the story when approaching how to talk about a country without acknowledging their history & recent issues. Let's unpack those now:
There are various reasons why some individuals might have negative opinions or concerns about China. It's essential to remember that these opinions are diverse and may not apply to everyone. Here are some common reasons:
Human Rights Concerns: China has faced criticism for its human rights record, including issues related to freedom of speech, press, and assembly. Concerns about the treatment of minority groups, such as Uighurs, have garnered significant attention.
Political System: China's one-party political system, led by the Chinese Communist Party, can be a point of contention for those who value multiparty democracies.
Censorship: The Great Firewall of China is a system of strict internet censorship and monitoring. This can be seen as limiting freedom of information and expression.
Trade Practices: Some people argue that China engages in unfair trade practices, including intellectual property theft and the undervaluing of its currency.
Environmental Concerns: China is a major global polluter. Its rapid industrialization has led to environmental issues like pollution and deforestation. Some criticize its environmental policies.
Animal Welfare: The treatment of animals, particularly in the wildlife trade and certain farming practices, has raised concerns.
COVID-19 Origin Controversy: The initial handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing debates about the virus's origin have added to negative perceptions.
Nationalism: China's assertive foreign policy, territorial disputes in the South China Sea, and its approach to Taiwan can create tensions and nationalist sentiments.
Lack of Transparency: Critics argue that China's government lacks transparency, particularly in terms of data and information sharing, leading to a lack of trust in official statements.
It's crucial to approach these concerns with a nuanced perspective. While there are issues and controversies, China is a vast and diverse country, and generalizations should be avoided. Public opinion can vary widely, and not everyone shares these concerns or sees China in the same light.
Let's not forget that China is the birthplace of countless inventions, with a very complicated history, just like any place. Some apprehension from patriotic Americans towards China may be rooted in jealousy, as they have risen to become a global manufacturing powerhouse. In Hawai'i in particular, there's a unique perspective on patriotism. Our history, marked by the illegal overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani and the annexation of our islands, has led to a distinct sense of identity and independence. Many Native Hawaiians & generations of locals don't share the same patriotic fervor for the United States as those in the continental part of the states.
It's also worth mentioning that Hawai'i, often described as a cultural melting pot, embraces a sense of openness and tolerance. The diverse makeup of our islands has fostered an environment of acceptance and appreciation for different cultures. People from Hawai'i tend to be more open-minded and less prone to the racial biases and prejudices that persist in some other parts of the United States.
While Hawai'i certainly embraces a diverse and open-minded culture, like any place, it's not without its own complexities. Our islands can often feel like one big small town, where everyone seems to know everyone else. However, it's essential to remember that this unique dynamic, while fostering tolerance and acceptance, can also give rise to its own set of issues. Not everyone who comes to our islands necessarily understands or respects the local culture. As mentioned earlier in this blog post, sometimes individuals, even business owners who say "No China in my stores", may bring their own biases to a place where they are not from, and frankly where they don't belong.
And just like China, the United States and Indonesia, both diverse countries, have their share of criticisms and controversies. Here are some common issues or concerns raised regarding these countries:
United States:
Gun Violence: The United States faces ongoing concerns about gun violence, leading to calls for stricter gun control measures.
Racial Tensions: Racial inequality and tensions persist, particularly in law enforcement interactions and access to opportunities.
Income Inequality: Wealth and income disparities are substantial in the U.S., leading to concerns about social and economic justice.
Healthcare Costs: The high cost of healthcare and issues around healthcare accessibility are subjects of national debate.
Environmental Impact: Despite being a major global emitter of greenhouse gases, the U.S. has been just as criticized as other countries for its environmental policies.
Political Polarization: The U.S. faces significant political polarization, affecting legislative efficiency and public discourse.
Indonesia:
Deforestation: Indonesia faces challenges related to deforestation, often linked to the palm oil industry, which has led to concerns about the environment and wildlife.
Corruption: Corruption has been a historical problem in Indonesia, affecting public services and governance.
Religious Tensions: Indonesia is a multi-religious nation, and tensions between religious communities, particularly between Muslims and non-Muslims, have been noted.
Environmental Issues: Indonesia grapples with issues such as air pollution, water pollution, and waste management.
Freedom of Expression: Some argue that freedom of speech is limited in Indonesia due to strict blasphemy laws.
Economic Inequality: Like many countries, economic inequality remains a concern in Indonesia.
It's important to recognize that the United States, China and Indonesia are complex nations with diverse populations. While there are issues and controversies, there are also positive aspects, such as cultural diversity, innovation, and community efforts to address these challenges. Public opinion on these issues can differ widely, and not all individuals share the same concerns about their own countries.
My Journey in Search of Sustainable Manufacturing:
Tai Swim Co originally started as a proudly Hawai'i-made brand. However, when I embarked on the quest to find local manufacturers, I was met with a harsh reality. The manufacturing options in Hawai'i were far from the idyllic, eco-conscious spaces I'd imagined. Instead, I found mold-covered walls, outdated and broken appliances, and unsustainable AC systems that ran incessantly. Leaky faucets wasted precious water and the conditions were embarassing.
It was an awakening experience, and one that was echoed in my visit to New York. There, I was shocked to discover antiquated punch-in, punch-out cards mounted on walls, and even the sight of a rat darting across my foot in the facility I visited in the Garment District. They had posters on the walls noting that their fabric stacked to the ceiling wasn't up to fire code. It was a hot mess, and an undeniable hazard. The sewing teams were people in their late 60s, who in my opinion, probably should not have been working there. The notion that American-made equates to higher standards quickly unraveled, revealing that eco-friendly, sustainable manufacturing practices can be found in surprising places.
This insight led me to redefine the priorities for my swimwear brand and strive for ethical, sustainable practices, regardless of the geographical location of our manufacturing partners.
The Takeaway: Do Your Research
My factories aren't just faceless production centers; they're an integral part of the Tai Swim Co family.
In an age where brands can easily disconnect from the people behind their products, I've chosen a different path. I've worked side by side with my factories, sewing bikinis, attaching tags, and crafting each piece with care. They're not just business partners; they're friends and family. We've shared meals, stories, and even homes. I talk to them more than I talk to my siblings or my parents. It's a level of trust and collaboration that's hard to find in this industry. To me, it's like having my cousin create my swimwear across the sea. Our bond goes beyond business; it's personal, and it's what makes Tai Swim Co more than just a brand; it's a close-knit community of people who genuinely care about the products we create.
Consumer Responsibility: A Matter of Choice
We might own an iPhone made in China, sitting on a chair crafted in the same country, while ordering countless products from Amazon — all without questioning the origins. Let's acknowledge that conscious consumer choices have a profound impact, and the same applies to the swimwear you choose to wear.
When it comes to choosing brands to support, your focus should be on transparency and ethical practices. Research where and how a product is made. Don't let misguided perceptions influence your choices. It's time we moved beyond unfounded biases and started giving brands the credit they deserve for their commitment to quality and sustainability.
Remember, it's not where a product is made; it's how it's made that counts. Let's appreciate and support the brands that uphold high standards, regardless of their manufacturing location.
This blog post was co-authored by individuals who are native to or have lived and worked in Hawai'i, China and Bali. With firsthand experience and in-depth knowledge of the labor conditions in these regions, they provide valuable insights and a nuanced perspective on the matter. Their personal accounts shed light on the reality of manufacturing in different parts of the world, dispelling myths and promoting a more informed understanding of global production practices.
]]>Hey girlies, it's Tai. I'm here to share some behind-the-scenes printmaking magic. Today, I'm diving into the art of drawing patterns for swimsuits. Buckle up; it's about to get creative, but also a little messy.
Designing a swimsuit pattern is a dance between precision and chaos, as any artist or creator might learn. Sometimes a mistake can lead to your biggest breakthrough. So, let's talk about my latest print, "EWA." Our Hawaiian dictionary gives us the definition, crooked. In school, my Hawaiian history teachers gave me so many definitions -- some sharing the mo'olelo of Kane & Kanaloa finding the original name place for 'Ewa Beach. Others shared how it can mean ill-fitting, or "a little off". It's also commonly known as just a simple way to explain the directional location of northwest on O'ahu. Now, before you raise an eyebrow, let me explain.
Drawing patterns is like orchestrating a symphony of curves and lines. It's a meticulous process. The "EWA" print, with its playful crookedness, celebrates the imperfections inherent in every stroke of creativity.
Picture this: sitting with a piece of paper, mapping out the blueprint for a new pattern. The lines need to be just right, curves accentuated, proportions perfected. But wait, here's where the magic happens. The "EWA" print steps in with its rebel spirit. It's a reminder that art isn't about rigid perfection; it's about embracing the beautifully unexpected.
In the world of swimsuit design, sometimes prints with the most imperfections can bring a refreshing twist. It's not about straight lines and predictable patterns. Instead, it's a celebration of the wonderfully crooked path that creativity often takes. Think of it as catching a wave that has a mind of its own, guiding you to uncharted territories.
As you draw the pattern, you might encounter those charming imperfections. A line might veer off course, a curve might take an unexpected turn. And guess what? That's the sweet spot. The "EWA" print tells us that these imperfections are what make the design uniquely perfect.
Now, let's talk technique. When drawing your swimsuit pattern, let your hand dance freely. Don't be afraid to deviate from the conventional. Allow those crooked lines to intertwine and create something that speaks to the heart soul of your design.
Here's the secret sauce: imperfections have character. They tell a story of an artist who dared to break free from the expected. So, as you dive into the world of pattern-making, embrace the idea that not everything needs to be perfect. Let your lines be a little crooked, your curves a bit unpredictable.
In the grand tapestry of swimwear design, the "EWA" print is our way of saying, "Hey, perfection is overrated. Let's celebrate the twists and turns that make our creations uniquely beautiful."
As you craft your swimsuit pattern, remember, it's not just about lines on paper; it's about the journey of creation. So, grab that sketchpad, ride the creative wave, and let the "EWA" print be your guide to the beautifully crooked world of swimwear design.
Stay tuned for the EWA drop, coming February 17th 2024.

Our intention was to explore the intricate nuances of the Hawaiian language, which, like any living language, undergoes continual evolution and adaptation. The richness of the Hawaiian language lies in its inherent dynamism, leading to diverse interpretations and meanings. In our exploration of the "EWA" print, we have embraced the term's multifold nature. It is crucial to acknowledge that language is subject to ongoing transformation, presenting a spectrum of definitions across different temporal and cultural contexts. We invite readers to engage in this communal exploration by sharing their interpretations or contributing to the evolving discourse in the comments section. Language, in our view, thrives when it becomes a collective experience, with each perspective contributing to the mosaic of meanings.
]]>We get it. Sometimes that cheap bikini is just what you need to fill your swimsuit season's needs. You maybe wear it once or twice, then donate or sell it. In Hawai'i, choosing high quality designer swimwear is an investment toward your lifestyle, not a one-time costume. Hawai'i girls will tell you that they don't ever apologize for investing in quality, and sometimes that tab can run up to $200 for just one swimsuit top.
For the sake of this blog post, we'll consider expensive swimwear in the $70-$200 (for one piece) range, since we are referring to luxury items. Most huge swim and surf brands that have been around for the longest are pricing their swimwear in the mid range aorund $40-$50 per piece, which in our opinion, is affordable in 2024. Unfortunately fast fashion has warped our mindsets for how much things should cost. When half the suits on Shein are rip-offs from smaller designers, their customers start to believe that because they look the same, they are the same. That could not be further from the truth.
When you explain this to someone in-person, they understand it without a doubt. It's when you get on TikTok and see small creators showing their expertly crafted small batch sustainable bikinis and all the comments are hate. "WHY is it $60? I just bought 6 suits from Walmart for $40" or "NOT FOR THAT price". It's extremely discouraging. Everybody wants the look without having to spend a whole lot, but you can't have it both ways. The girls who spend a little more on their suits will tell you that the best bikinis they have ever had are the ones that were probably pricier than the rest. It's one of the best kept secrets that majority of our friends from the states can't seem to understand.
So let's dive straight into the sizzling topic that's been making waves: why the heck are bikinis so expensive? Before you think this is just another rant, let's break down the facts and reveal some truth on why investing in quality swimwear is worth every penny.
It's All About the Fabric, Baby: So, you scored that $20 bikini from the bargain bin at a massive chain store, and it disintegrated after a few dips in the salty sea. Surprise, surprise! Quality comes with a price. Hawai'i designers know that the fabric is the backbone of a bikini. At Tai Swim Co, we choose materials that can handle the sun, salt, and surf without losing their vibrant colors or structural integrity. They are made from 100% recycled materials & are dyed naturally - meaning the color won't fade over time since it's not synthetic.
Hardware-Free Happiness: Ever had a metal clasp or buckle give out during your first wear with your new suit? Yeah, not fun. High-end Hawai'i swimwear often skips the hardware for a seamless, comfy fit. No rust, no awkward tan lines, no constant replacement. While hardware can offer more size inclusion with adjustability, you can often achieve the same goal with long ties or better designed swim cuts.
Seamless Mastery: Seamless stitching isn't just a design choice; it's an art form. Hawai'i swimwear embraces this technique, giving you reversible options that are as versatile as your island adventures. You get two looks in one, and who doesn't love a double-feature? Yeah, your bikini top might have cost $100, but if its reversible, then it's more like you're getting two for an extremely fair price.
Local Love and Expert Craftsmanship: When you're investing in a locally-designed bikini, you're not just buying swimwear; you're supporting local artisans and craftsmanship. Each piece is a labor of love, carefully crafted by skilled hands who understand the unique demands of island life. Also let's just be real - those cheaper, mass produced, graphic print digital design bikinis with the bright colors from our middle-school eras are just plain ugly. There is nothing cute about them, in our opinion. We have put this to the test wearing both. The compliments that you get wearing high end luxury designer swimwear from a local brand make the heads spin like no other.
Worth the Investment: Let's talk longevity. Sure, you could grab that $10 special every season, but how many Walmart swimsuits will you toss in a landfill by the time our luxury piece is still strutting its stuff? It's not just about affordability; it's about sustainable choices and creating less waste.
In a world of throwaway fashion, investing in quality swimwear isn't just about showing off; it's an investment in yourself. So, next time you eye a price tag and gasp, remember, it's not just a bikini; it's a commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and the lifestyle that makes Hawai'i swimwear stand out.
Disclaimer:
This isn't a snub to those who choose cheap swimwear. We get it; budgets are a real thing. But hey, don't judge us for rocking a $200 one-piece because we won't feel bad about it. In the same way that you would spend a couple hundred on a high quality winter coat that doesn't need maintenance or replacement season after season, we'll continue spending our paychecks on the hottest bikinis on the beach. We're not just buying swimwear; we're investing in an ocean-loving, beach-chic lifestyle that lasts for years to come, while your Shein suit falls apart.
The holiday season is a time of great excitement, and it's often accompanied by some fantastic deals and discounts. Black Friday, in particular, has become synonymous with incredible savings and the start of holiday shopping. While it's wonderful to take advantage of these deals, it's also essential to be a mindful shopper.
]]>The holiday season is a time of great excitement, and it's often accompanied by some fantastic deals and discounts. Black Friday, in particular, has become synonymous with incredible savings and the start of holiday shopping. While it's wonderful to take advantage of these deals, it's also essential to be a mindful shopper.
Here are some tips on how to make the most of your Black Friday shopping while being responsible and mindful:
1. Plan Ahead: Before you head out or start browsing online, create a list of what you genuinely need or want. Having a plan will help you stay focused on your priorities and avoid impulse purchases.
2. Set a Budget: It's easy to get carried away with great deals, but setting a budget and sticking to it will ensure you don't overspend. Be mindful of your financial limits and avoid going into unnecessary debt.
3. Support Small and Sustainable: Consider supporting small businesses and sustainable brands. Shopping locally or choosing products made with eco-friendly materials can have a significant positive impact. These businesses often need the most support, and your purchases can contribute to their growth.
4. Quality Over Quantity: Sometimes, a higher price tag can be justified by the item's quality and longevity. When possible, invest in products that will last longer and serve you well, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
5. Avoid Impulse Purchases: Those "doorbuster" deals can be tempting, but pause and think before making a purchase. Do you genuinely need it, or are you buying it just because it's on sale? Impulse buying can lead to unnecessary clutter.
6. Check Return Policies: Make sure you understand the return policies of the stores you're shopping at, particularly if you're buying gifts. This can save you from headaches later on if you need to exchange or return an item.
7. Shop Online Mindfully: If you're shopping online, be cautious of your digital footprint. Shop from secure websites, avoid saving your payment information on multiple platforms, and check for the padlock icon in the address bar to ensure your data is safe.
8. Be Patient: Black Friday can get hectic, and sometimes the best deals are not on the day itself but in the days leading up to it. Be patient and shop when you feel comfortable.
9. Use Cashback and Coupons: Look for cashback offers, coupons, and discounts to maximize your savings further. The Tai Swim Ambassador social media profiles are the best place to find additional savings on your favorite eco friendly bikinis & accessories!
10. Give Mindfully: If you're buying gifts for others, think about what the recipient would genuinely appreciate. Consider experiences or sustainable gifts, which can often be more meaningful than material possessions.
In summary, Black Friday can be a great opportunity to find exceptional deals, but it's essential to shop mindfully. Make a plan, set a budget, and prioritize quality, sustainability, and supporting small businesses. By doing so, you can enjoy the holiday season while making responsible and mindful purchasing choices.
]]>In the world of swimwear and sustainable fashion, it's essential to find inspiration that aligns with your brand's values and message. At Tai Swim Co, we're on a journey that transcends mere fashion; it's about weaving the cultural tapestry of Hawaii into every bikini we create. Being a brand that is born & based in Hawai'i, we have a unique placement in appreciating the culture that we are part of. One of the most profound mo'olelo (stories) that resonate with us is that of Naupaka Kahakai and Naupaka Kuahiwi. This poignant tale was the inspiration for two of our latest prints, included within our brand values that feature the essence of sustainability, high quality, affordability, and inclusion that Tai Swim Co proudly holds dear.
The Legend of Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi
Naupaka Kahakai and Naupaka Kuahiwi are two distinct species of beach naupaka and mountain naupaka plants found in Hawaii. This is a story that every kid here knows. Whether you were told by your Kumu in elementary school or learned about it on a class day during a field trip, this story is such a beautiful one & you can find its lessons & meanings weaved throughout many fashion & art pieces around the islands.
The mo'olelo tells a tale of eternal love, separation, and longing. Naupaka Kahakai, the beach naupaka, is recognized by its half-flowers that appear to be missing the other half. Naupaka Kuahiwi, the mountain naupaka, exhibits the same pattern, only with the other half of the flower. The legend says that these two plants are star-crossed lovers, forever divided by the mountains and the sea.
At Tai Swim Co, we find inspiration in this story that speaks to the unbreakable bond between nature, people, and the environment. Our swimwear, made with sustainable materials, aims to connect our wearers with Hawaii's natural beauty. The mo'olelo of Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi reminds us of the importance of sustainability, ensuring that the natural world and our planet remain interconnected.
Sustainability and Environmental Consciousness
The story of Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi teaches us to honor the land and the sea. At Tai Swim Co, we believe in eco-friendly practices that minimize our environmental footprint. Our swimwear is crafted using recycled materials, embodying the spirit of 'malama 'aina.
High Quality and Craftsmanship
The enduring love of Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi mirrors the lasting quality of our bikinis. We're dedicated to providing high-quality swimwear that stands the test of time, much like the love between these two plants.
Affordability and Inclusivity
We understand that fashion should be accessible to all. Inclusivity is a significant part of our brand. The story of Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi inspires us to ensure our bikinis are affordable, so anyone can connect with Hawaii's culture and its beautiful environment.
Blending It All Together
Much like Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi, our bikinis represent a blend of different elements. They weave together sustainability, high quality, affordability, and inclusivity, creating more than just swimwear – they embody the spirit of Hawaii.
In a world of ever-evolving fashion, we find timeless wisdom in the legends of Hawaii. The story of Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi teaches us that true beauty lies in the connections between people and nature, and that's what we celebrate in our bikinis. At Tai Swim Co, we're dedicated to producing sustainable, high-quality, affordable swimwear that's inclusive to all. Our brand stands as a testament to the enduring love and connection that, much like Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi, can never be truly divided.
Closing Thoughts
In the Naupaka Kahakai and Kuahiwi, we find a love that transcends barriers, a love that speaks of Hawaii's eternal beauty. It inspires us to create swimwear that not only helps you connect with the islands but also reflects our commitment to sustainability, quality, affordability, and inclusivity. Just as these two naupaka species remain forever entwined, our swimwear ties together all these essential elements in every bikini we craft.
Remember, it's not just swimwear; it's a piece of Hawaii's cultural heritage and its profound connection with nature and people.
]]>In the world of swimwear and boardshorts, there's a quiet culprit that has evaded the spotlight for far too long – hardware. You know, those metal clasps, buckles, and grommets that designers often add for "style." While some might argue that these shiny bits of metal or plastic bring an element of aesthetics, the downsides far outweigh any perceived benefits. Let's dive into why swimwear hardware should sink to the bottom of the ocean.
1. Rust Never Sleeps:
2. Planned Obsolescence:
3. Unnecessary Waste:
4. Fabric Follies:
5. Comfort Conundrum:
6. Aesthetically Challenged:
7. Unsustainability Strikes:
In a world where environmental consciousness and comfort should guide our choices, the era of swimwear hardware has passed. Swimwear should be about celebrating nature, embracing the sea, and feeling good while doing it. The future of swimwear lies in sustainable, comfortable, and elegant designs that need no metal or plastic add-ons. Let's leave the rusty buckles behind and dive into a more responsible, eco-friendly world of swimwear.
It's time to set a new course for swimwear fashion, one that steers away from rusty hardware and toward a future of comfort, sustainability, and timeless style.

We got to introduce some of our newest prints that we have been working on for the past few years. Check out everything dropping for 2024:
Kahakai, a print inspired by the naupaka plant that grows on nearly all of our beaches in Hawaii. It’s iconic five pedal flower is infamous in the legend about the two variations of the naupaka plant.
Avalon, a throwback hibiscus print inspired by the classic floral beach prints of the early 2000s and the small island town off the coast of California.
Ewa, pronounced “eh-va,” is a woodblock style inspired print named after the classic beach on Oahu. It’s vibrant reds are reminiscent of the red soil unique to all the Hawaiian Islands.
Ka’ohao, pronounced “ka-oh-how,” is another hibiscus flower print inspired by the classic prints on Aloha shirts, more commonly know as Hawaiian shirts in the continental US. The old style aloha shirts all tell stories and that was our main goal for this print. Ka'ohao is the proper name for the windward neighborhood of Lanikai. The print features some of the main sights from Lanikai including the iconic Mokulua Islands, Hawaiian monk seals, red-footed boobies, coconut tree palms, and the Lanikai pillar that stands at the entrance of the area.
Get ready to feast your eyes on a stunning array of swimsuits that pay homage to Hawaii’s natural beauty.

Similar hues, analogous patterns, and even comparable names weave through the fabric of distinct brands. It can leave one pondering, are these genuine coincidences or a subtle form of mimicry? Let's unravel the intricacies that underlie this seeming synchronicity in the realm of our island fashion. In this blog post, we use testimonials from actual customers & their names have been changed for their privacy.
Hues and Tints:
One undeniable element influencing this intriguing phenomenon is the artistic canvas every Hawaiian & Hawai'i based designer draws from—nature itself. These colors, often a foundational choice for any designer, play a significant role. The hues of Hawai'i are embedded in the petals of its flowers, the depths of its oceans, and the lushness of its jungles. Therefore, it's no surprise that designers may, independently, gravitate towards resembling shades. The island's vibrant surroundings paint a palette that's undeniable, influencing designers collectively.
Pantone Colors and Palette Play:
A fascinating aspect of the synchronicity in Hawai'i swimwear is the influence of Pantone colors. Designers are well aware of the universal impact of these tones. Each year, the Pantone Color Institute releases its Color of the Year, a selection that reverberates across industries. In Hawai'i, where nature's hues are in abundance, designers align their creations with these recognized tones. From the tranquility of blues resembling the Pacific Ocean to the vibrant greens akin to lush tropical foliage, the Pantone palette provides a common language for artists to resonate with global aesthetics.
(example: pantone 2023 color viva magenta)
(viva magenta as seen in Tai Swim Co's Hau flower "Haena" print, 2023 release)
Native Roots and Name Games:
Hawai'i is a place where culture intertwines with creativity. Many designers are inspired by the rich tapestry of native plants and their Hawaiian names. This, too, contributes to apparent similarities in naming and color choices. There's a unique resonance in wearing designs that echo the beauty of the islands, with names rooted in Hawaiian language. Hence, the resemblance, sometimes coincidental, arises from a shared love for the essence of Hawai'i.
Merchandising Magic:
While it might seem like designs are hastily replicated in the world of Hawai'i swimwear, an understanding of the industry's intricate workings unveils a different truth.
Designs don't simply manifest overnight as a response to a competitor's release. Instead, most swimwear designers, including those in Hawai'i, operate on a meticulously planned merchandising schedule with release dates charted years in advance.
For instance, in 2023, Tai from Tai Swim Co has her prints lined up until 2027. Therefore, if similar prints emerge within weeks of each other, it's a testament to the planned, intricate workings of the industry rather than a mere copycat scenario. Designers invest time in ideation, creating samples, manufacturing, and planning releases, contributing to the synchronicity in the fashion world. However, if a design remarkably similar to another emerges after a significant time gap, one can question the authenticity, suggesting possible replication instead of natural inspiration.
But honestly, imagine having the time to look up what your competitor did five years ago. And then re-doing it? When it's already been done? That doesn't make any sense.
"Nobody wants to see the same print with two colors changed a year later." - Kylie. However, this it not necessarily accurate to say everyone feels this way. When Tai was growing up between the Big Island & Kaua'i, her favorite designers would draw one hibiscus, & keep repeating it to death (every season in every color of the rainbow) until it was almost boring. It wasn't creative. And yet, every single person on the beach was wearing it & the prints sold out every time. Tai was not immune to the craze either, because she was one of the people who would help them sell out. Maybe it was just due to a lack of options back then. Hundreds of dollars per piece for a blue hibiscus print that just had a sister print release in red the year before. "Girl, we eat it up. The same flower with two colors changed. I don't know why I like it" - Maddy
"It's like you've cracked the code to what local girls like, we just wanna wear pua" - Deidre
At Tai Swim Co, we believe in producing 100% completely original hand-drawn prints, taking pictures of all our own flowers, tracing them organically, & arranging them in ways that haven't been done before. We don't repeat or restock prints, leaving each drawing as its own original art piece, frozen in time but never dated. Read more about our process on our latest summer drop here.
Navigating the Unseen Threads:
To the casual observer, it might seem like new designs appear out of thin air, mirroring each other's essence. However, delving deeper reveals a fascinating world of meticulous planning, creativity, and coordination. This foresight ensures a smooth production process, accounting for design ideation, material sourcing, sample creation, and manufacturing. When two brands launch similar prints, it's often not a hurried attempt to replicate. Rather, it's a convergence of well-planned schedules and a shared love for Hawai'i's natural beauty.
EXAMPLES OF COINCIDENCES IN THE HAWAI'I DESIGNER WORLD:
(Tai Swim "Hanalei" print, released December 2020, source: Tai Swim Co Instagram)
(Benoa Swim "Hanalei" print, released January 2022, source: Poshmark)
(Acacia Swimwear "Black Elephant" print, released 2015, source: Poshmark)
For instance, if two brands release a print with the same flower within months of each other, it's a testament to the harmonious resonance designers have with their surroundings and each other, showcasing the unity in celebrating the rich tapestry of Hawai'i's floral heritage.
So, while coincidences do happen, they are more a reflection of shared inspiration and meticulous planning than an attempt to imitate.
(Acacia Swimwear "Hilo" print, released Resort 2023, source: Poshmark)
(Tai Swim "Hilo" print, released Spring 2023, source: Tai Swim Co)
While all beautiful prints share the same name or similar design, they are inspired by different features of their nameplace area. For example, Hanalei, on Kaua'i's north shore is full of electric blue water, vibrant bright florals & endless fields of kalo. Both prints are a testament to how a designer can pay homage to a piece of their home in entirely different ways. Another example is the two depictions of "Hilo". While the print name is the same, the release date being within days of each other is a huge coincidence & testament to how Hawai'i designers can be inspired by the same things & release collections with the same names at the same time.
It's essential to emphasize that this post isn't meant to undermine or discount the experiences of others in the swimwear and fashion industry. We understand that parallel designs can often be more than mere coincidences. In the competitive world of fashion, it's not uncommon for innovative designs to inspire others. While some coincidences do happen, it's also true that more deliberate acts of mimicry occur. As creators, we stand united in our support for designers who've worked tirelessly on their unique designs, only to see them replicated by others. We acknowledge the creativity and determination of all designers, and it's our hope that, in the spirit of artistic integrity, we can continue to respect and protect the authenticity of each other's work.
So your bikini print has been copied, can you do anything about it? The Answer is: not really.
There are so many challenges of protecting your designs due to copyright limitations. Copyright is a common topic that arises in these situations. As a small business in the world of swimwear fashion, the protection copyright offers is more limited than you might think. Our designs can be classified as "useful articles," meaning they have a practical function, and this often falls outside the scope of traditional copyright protection. Yes, we can copyright our illustrations, but this doesn't necessarily protect against those who might mimic the design in a similar but non-identical way. Large fashion conglomerates often have the means to pursue copyright infringement cases, but for small businesses like Tai Swim Co, it's an intricate, costly, and uncertain process that often doesn't yield the desired results. So, as frustrating as it can be when we see our designs imitated, the reality is, we're in a lose-lose scenario when it comes to copyright battles. The best thing to do it stay ahead of the trends & be original.
MORE EXAMPLES OF COINCIDENCES IN THE HAWAI'I DESIGNER WORLD:

(Acacia Swim "Islet" print, released unknown, source: Poshmark)
(Lokahi Swim "Earthy Hau" Print, released October 2023, source: Lokahi Swim)

All of that being said, in this vibrant tapestry of inspirations and creations, it's essential to raise a discerning eye. The essence of Hawai'i, its culture, and its traditions, should be respected and honored. Unfortunately, there are instances of cultural appropriation, where brands, often not even based/from from Hawai'i, use sacred words like "aloha" and exploit Hawaiian symbols for profit. These actions trivialize the rich heritage of the islands and disrespect the native culture.
It's crucial to call out such appropriation and support genuinely local and authentic Hawaiian brands that not only draw inspiration from their roots but also actively contribute to the community and the preservation of Hawaiian culture.
Addressing Fast Fashion:
In this world of fashion, the pace and scale of production vary vastly. It's important to note that the dynamics we discussed earlier are often not applicable to the realm of fast fashion. Giant brands, fueled by massive resources and a global reach, can swiftly replicate designs, even from small designers, and bring them to market within a few weeks or even days. This starkly contrasts with the meticulous planning, dedication, and genuine artistic endeavor that go into creating unique designs by smaller, independent businesses. The struggle for smaller brands is not only about protecting their creations but also about advocating for ethical, thoughtful production in an industry dominated by speed and profit.
(example photo: Tai Swim Co Hanalei Print DEC 2020 release, next to rip off stolen design from Shein, released FEB 2021)
Additionally, determining if something is a legitimate copy isn't always straightforward. A telltale sign of a copied design is when elements match up precisely. For instance, if a flower motif has been traced or directly lifted, you can cut it out and overlay it on the suspected copy. If the lines align seamlessly, it's evident that the design was replicated. This practice is sadly prevalent, especially in the fashion industry, underlining the need for vigilance and supporting original creators.
It's crucial to emphasize that in most cases, the brands themselves aren't involved in contentious battles over these resemblances. Often, it's not even the designers who are perturbed by these coincidences but rather a few individuals who, for various reasons, take offense or find fault in such occurrences. In reality, it's a matter of perspective, and most designers, while protective of their creations, understand that this field of artistry often shares common threads due to the inherent nature of inspiration and creativity. The fashion industry is one of camaraderie and mutual respect, and it's usually the exceptional outlier that stirs up any controversy. So, as we navigate this unique world of swimwear and fashion, let's remember that unity and collaboration often outweigh discord.
So, wouldn't it be awesome if all these local brands put their brains in the same room and designed a print they could all release together?
While the idea of all these brands coming together and collaboratively designing a print is a dreamy one, it's a notion that Tai might hold exclusively for now. Until such a creative coalition becomes a reality, let's cherish the diversity of Hawai'i-inspired designs they offer. Each brand brings its unique touch, telling its own story of the islands we love. The vibrant hibiscus, the tranquil ocean, or the lush tropical foliage, captured through these various lenses, allow us to celebrate and share the spirit of Hawai'i in multiple forms. At the heart of it, isn't that the essence of the Hawai'i's culture we all grew up in?
In the enchanting world of Hawai'i-inspired fashion, similarities do exist, but they're not mere copies. At least not every time. The shared love for Hawai'i's natural beauty, intertwined with a meticulous planning process, often results in parallel creations. It's a celebration of the island's allure and the profound impact it has on the creative minds shaping Hawai'i's fashion landscape. So, next time you see striking resemblances, remember, it's not necessarily always a matter of copying, but an ode to the beauty that Hawai'i shares with the world 🌺🌿
While we've discussed the challenges and nuances of the fashion world's coincidences and copies, it's crucial to remember that as consumers, you have the power to influence positive change. Supporting original designers and businesses committed to ethical and sustainable practices is one way to foster a more responsible fashion industry.
Research Before You Shop: Take a moment to research the brands you're interested in. Look for their values, their commitment to ethical practices, and their sourcing policies. Are they supporting local artisans or contributing to the communities they draw inspiration from?
Prioritize Authenticity: When shopping for swimwear and fashion, prioritize brands that are genuinely inspired by the cultures they represent or the environments they draw from. Seek out companies that engage in fair trade practices and are dedicated to protecting the ecosystems they love.
Ask Questions: Don't be afraid to ask brands questions about their production processes, sourcing, and ethical standards. The more informed consumers are, the more accountable the industry becomes.
Educate Others: Share your knowledge and experiences with friends and family. By raising awareness about ethical fashion practices and the potential issues with copycat designs, you're contributing to a more informed and conscious fashion community.
Hold Brands Accountable: When brands engage in unethical practices or cultural appropriation, it's important to hold them accountable. Your voice, along with others, can pressure brands to rethink their practices and become more responsible.
Remember, it's not just the responsibility of businesses to change; it's also up to consumers to drive positive change in the fashion industry. By supporting brands committed to ethical and original design, you're contributing to a more sustainable and authentic fashion landscape.
Finally, in the grand scheme of things, it's essential to remember that these fashion coincidences, though intriguing to discuss, are relatively minor issues in our world. While we, as designers and creators, value our craft and protect our work, it's important not to lose sight of the more significant challenges and problems facing society. If you ever find yourself getting worked up over these resemblances, it might be a good moment to take a step back, breathe, and focus on the more profound issues that warrant our collective attention. After all, fashion, while a vibrant and creative industry, is just one facet of a much larger world.
The photos showcased in this article were generously submitted by loyal customers of the brands mentioned. While they illustrate intriguing resemblances, we embrace and encourage our community to keep sharing instances of coincidences, copies, or similar designs. If you come across such occurrences in the ever-evolving world of fashion, please don't hesitate to send them to info@taiswim.co. We'll be delighted to incorporate them into this ongoing conversation.
]]>In an era dominated by influencer culture and brand collaborations, Tai Swim Co has chosen to follow a path less traveled. As a small batch bikini brand deeply rooted in authenticity and genuine connections, we have consciously decided not to engage in traditional 'collabs' where products are sent to influencers with the hope of exposure.
At Tai Swim Co, we believe in authenticity. We believe in real connections, real experiences, and real engagement. We believe in a community that's built on genuine love for our swimwear, not on transactions. Hence, our approach to collaborations is decidedly unique.
This year, we launched our first ever ambassador program. We have hosted events, photoshoots, brand trips & more. We have cultivated genuine relationships with some of our best customers & loyal supporters which is more authentic than sending a stranger something that they have never considered purchasing.
And let's talk about the classic 'hey wanna collab' DM—a not-so-welcome guest in the inbox of every small business owner.
You take a peek at their profile, and what do you find? They aren't even following you, the one small, simple gesture that costs them nothing but means the world to a creator. But oh no, that's too much to ask, apparently.
And let's talk about the audacity. Some "creators" have been known to charge a whopping $3,000-$10,000 for a feed post when their follower count struggles to hit double digits. It's like they've cracked the code to making brands rich overnight with their ten followers. "If I ever receive DMs like that, they swiftly find their way into the digital trash bin" said one small business owner. They followed up with "if I'm feeling generous, I might just send them this blog post—consider it a crash course in manners and genuine collaboration."
Here are some of the reasons why brands are taking a different approach with the way they build their brand presence these days:
Building Genuine Relationships: Instead of pursuing fleeting collabs with a multitude of influencers, we focus on building genuine relationships with our customers. Our brand is immensely grateful to have a tribe of ambassadors—individuals who genuinely love our products and choose to buy them. These ambassadors organically promote Tai Swim Co. to their community because they believe in what we stand for and the quality of our swimwear.
Supporting Authentic Advocates: Our ambassadors are not just promoters; they're genuine advocates of our brand. They choose to invest in our products, making their endorsement authentic and meaningful. Their support comes from a place of love for our designs, sustainability initiatives, and commitment to quality. This creates a more authentic and trustworthy connection with potential customers.
Promoting Transparency and Integrity: We value transparency and integrity in our business practices. Our approach ensures that our ambassadors are not merely interested in freebies but are genuinely aligned with our brand's ethos. This fosters a community where trust and credibility are the cornerstones of our relationship with our advocates and customers.
Focusing on Meaningful Engagement: Rather than measuring success through the number of influencers we collaborate with, we measure our success by the meaningful engagement we cultivate with our customers. We strive for interactions that go beyond the superficial, where our customers feel heard, valued, and appreciated. One time, we did an A/B test and sent a suit to a creator with over a million followers, and one with just over a thousand. The creator with a million followers posted on their story and didn't tag us. The suit was never seen again despite an agreement. The creator with the small following posted about it in their feed & tiktok, but because our brand is so small batch, we sent them the last suit of that kind. So everything they were promoting was sold out. Neither creator generated any sales, and we actually received a return request that day. Not to say that it was related, but it was a funny coincidence.
Quality Over Quantity: In a world of rapidly changing trends and fleeting influencer fame, we believe in the enduring power of quality. We emphasize crafting durable, timeless swimwear that stands the test of time, embodying the essence of sustainability. Our focus remains on producing swimwear that our customers cherish, use, and love, rather than just momentarily flaunt.
At Tai Swim Co., we proudly operate on a small batch model, crafting our swimwear with meticulous attention and care.
Our limited production means that often, just a single piece remains available on our website. When someone reaches out seeking a collaboration and scores that last piece, it's disheartening for both parties.
The unfortunate reality is that they end up promoting a product that we no longer have in stock, unintentionally creating frustration for potential customers. Our commitment lies in providing genuine and honest experiences, aligning with our values of transparency and authenticity
Tai Swim Co believes in fostering genuine connections and promoting a culture of authenticity. We strive to build a community based on shared values, mutual respect, and a deep appreciation for quality swimwear. While collabs have their place in the industry, we're proud to take a stand for what we believe in, staying true to our values and the essence of genuine connection. It's not about quantity; it's about quality and authenticity.
Be a part of Tai Swim Co, a brand that believes in you, in us, and in the beauty of genuine relationships. Our ambassador applications are always open, we look forward to you joining us in our journey towards authenticity.

]]>The Early Days
As a high school student with a flair for creativity, Tai found herself crafting unique bikinis for her friends to earn some extra cash. Little did she know that this humble beginning would spark a fire within her. Her cultural roots & knowledge of the fragility of Hawai'i's marine ecosystem, she felt compelled to take action and make a difference.
The Turning Point
As a junior in high school, Tai took the plunge and transformed her hobby into a sustainable business. She realized that discarded fishing nets and ocean waste were wreaking havoc on marine life, and she saw an opportunity to create change. Determined to pioneer the concept of eco-friendly swimwear, she set out on a mission to make a positive impact on both the fashion industry and the environment. While Tai Swim Co's official launch was many years later, the suits from her first collection as a teen sparked the flame that lead her to making her own business in her homeland.
The Journey to Sustainability
Tai Swim Co. began its journey by using reclaimed materials to craft stunning bikinis. Tai's dedication to sustainability led her to explore recycled ocean waste as a key component in her designs. Every piece in the collection tells a story of transformation - from trash to treasure, creating swimwear that embodies both style and purpose.
A Privilege and a Responsibility
Growing up in Hawaii, Tai has an intimate understanding of the importance of caring for the 'aina. She recognizes that being raised in this paradise is a privilege and a responsibility. With this profound awareness, she strives to create swimwear that aligns with the ethos of her homeland - respecting nature, preserving the environment, and supporting the local communities she grew up in.
Inspiring Change
Tai's dedication to sustainability has not only revolutionized her brand but has also inspired others to follow in her footsteps. Her commitment to the environment has opened doors for collaborations with like-minded partners and customers who share her vision for a cleaner, greener future.
Every day, Tai reflects on her incredible journey. From crafting bikinis out of fishing nets to creating swimwear from recycled ocean waste, she has come full circle. With every bikini she creates, Tai continues to make the world a better place, one stitch at a time.

In a world where swimwear trends come and go, one style that has stood the test of time is the tiny, minimal coverage Brazilian-style bikini. At Tai Swim Co, we wholeheartedly embrace this bikini minimalism, celebrating confidence and self-expression. In this blog post, we will dive deeper into the essence of our brand, exploring how our love for skimpy swimwear is rooted in childhood memories and the empowering impact it has on body positivity and personal style.

Blending timeless design with sustainability, Tai Swim Co has been on a mission to create eco-friendly swimwear. In our pursuit of environmental consciousness, we have explored various materials and their sustainability aspects. One such material is Tyvek, a unique synthetic fabric known for its durability, water resistance, and lightweight nature.
So, what is Tyvek?
Tyvek, a unique synthetic material known for its durability and water resistance, has become a staple in various industries. From construction and packaging to fashion and art, its versatility knows no bounds. However, as sustainability and eco-consciousness take center stage, it's essential to explore ways to recycle and upcycle Tyvek to minimize waste and make a positive impact on the environment. In this blog post, we'll delve into the possibilities of recycling and upcycling Tyvek, transforming it into new creations and extending its lifespan.
Tyvek's Sustainability Aspects:
Recycling Solutions by DuPont:
Upcycling and Repurposing:
Recycling Tyvek: Tyvek is classified as a #2 plastic, which means it can be recycled. Many recycling centers accept Tyvek, but it's important to check with local recycling facilities to determine their specific guidelines. Properly recycling Tyvek involves separating it from other materials, ensuring it is clean and free from contaminants. By recycling Tyvek, we contribute to reducing the demand for virgin materials and conserve valuable resources.

]]>In recent years, a noticeable trend has emerged in the fashion industry where an increasing number of brands are moving away from offering returns. This shift is driven by a growing awareness of the environmental impact of returns and the need to address unsustainable consumption habits. In this blog post, we will delve into the reasons why many brands are adopting this approach, focusing on the importance of sustainability and the drawbacks of impulse purchases.
Sustainable Alternatives: Instead of offering returns, many brands are focusing on providing accurate product information, detailed sizing guides, and customer support to help shoppers make informed choices. They invest in creating transparent and reliable platforms where customers can ask questions, enabling them to make confident purchases without the need for returns.
Extending Product Lifecycles: By reducing returns and encouraging conscious consumption, brands contribute to extending the lifecycle of their products. When customers carefully select items that align with their preferences and needs, they are more likely to keep and utilize them for a longer time, reducing waste and promoting a more sustainable fashion ecosystem.
Encouraging personal responsibility: It's essential to take personal responsibility for factors like sizing, fit, and style choices. By carefully considering your preferences and measurements before making a purchase, you can minimize the need for returns and contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry.
Emphasizing the value of repairing and reusing: Sometimes, minor issues like a small rip or a loose button can tempt us to return an item. However, we encourage you to explore repair options instead. Consider learning basic sewing skills or seeking out local tailors who can fix these issues. By embracing repair and reuse, we can extend the lifespan of our clothing, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
Exploring alternative solutions: Rather than automatically resorting to returns, let's consider alternatives that breathe new life into our unwanted items. Reselling them through online platforms or local consignment stores can give them a second chance with someone who will love and appreciate them. By embracing these alternatives, we contribute to a circular economy and reduce the environmental impact of fashion waste.
Educating on sustainable care practices: Proper care and maintenance of clothing play a vital role in reducing returns and prolonging the life of our garments. Understanding washing instructions, appropriate storage methods, and handling practices can prevent damage and decrease the need for returns. By adopting sustainable care practices, we can make a positive impact on both our wardrobes and the environment.
By incorporating these points into our fashion choices, we can promote mindful consumption and contribute to a more sustainable future.
The shift away from offering returns in the fashion industry reflects a commitment to sustainability and a recognition of the environmental impact of impulse purchases and excessive returns. By encouraging conscious consumption and providing accurate information, brands aim to minimize waste, reduce carbon emissions, and foster a more sustainable future for fashion. As consumers, we can play our part by making thoughtful choices, considering our purchases carefully, and embracing the ethos of sustainability in our fashion decisions.
Remember, every conscious decision counts, and together, we can create a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry. Let's strive to be responsible consumers, taking steps to minimize returns and embrace the principles of sustainable fashion.

]]>The inspiration for Haena came to life on a day-trip to Kauai's North Shore in early spring 2021. I spent my elementary years at Hanalei School before moving to O'ahu. As an artist, I am constantly inspired by the natural beauty around me, and the Garden Isle's iconic area of Haena on Kauai's North Shore is no exception. The area is known for its stunning natural beauty, including the rivers lined with Hau bushes that bloom with beautiful pink and purple flowers. Drawn to the unique shape and vibrant colors of the Hau flower, I decided to create a hand-drawn illustration that captures the essence of this beautiful flower and the surrounding area. With careful attention to detail and a deep appreciation for the natural world, I aimed to create a piece of art that truly embodies the spirit of Haena and its stunning natural beauty.
My favorite part about the print designing process is to see the digitized version of something that was found in nature just in my life. Here are some of the reasons why you might like hand drawn prints a little better:
🌺 Unique Designs: Hand-drawn prints offer unique and one-of-a-kind designs that cannot be replicated with digital printing techniques. This makes them stand out from other swimwear on the market and provides a unique selling point for designers and brands.
🌺 Personal Touch: Hand-drawn prints have a personal touch that digital prints can lack. The artist's hand is evident in the details of the print, creating a human connection that customers can appreciate and connect with.
(tai holding the original flower that inspired the Haena print almost 2.5 years before release)
🌺 Environmental Sustainability: Hand-drawn prints are more environmentally sustainable than digital prints because they require less energy and produce fewer emissions. Example: painting versus printing. This makes them a more eco-friendly choice for swimwear designers and brands looking to reduce their environmental impact.
🌺 Longer Lifespan: Hand-drawn prints won’t lose their trend. As most of the inspiration comes from nature, the designs will remain classic & timeless.
🌺 Artistic Expression: Hand-drawn prints allow artists to express themselves creatively and showcase their talents. This makes the swimwear more than just functional clothing, but also wearable art.
🌺 Cultural Significance: Hand-drawn prints often have cultural significance, drawing inspiration from traditional patterns and motifs. This adds cultural value to the swimwear and can help preserve cultural traditions.
🌺 High Quality: Hand-drawn prints are typically of higher quality than digitally printed fabrics, with more attention paid to detail and color matching. This results in swimwear that is of higher quality and better value for YOU.
Hand-drawn prints offer numerous advantages over other printing techniques, particularly in the realm of swimwear and sustainability. Their uniqueness, personal touch, and artistic expression make them stand out from the crowd, while their environmental sustainability and longer lifespan make them a more eco-friendly and cost-effective choice. As an artist, I was inspired by the natural beauty of Kauai's Garden Isle area of Haena, where Hau bushes bloom with vibrant flowers along the rivers. By creating a hand-drawn illustration of the Hau flower, I sought to capture the essence of this beautiful area and its unique features, showcasing the beauty of the natural world through my art. Through the combination of art and nature, we can create a sustainable and beautiful world that brings joy and inspiration to all who experience it.

Meticulous quality control measures are taken to maintain high product standards, reducing the likelihood of manufacturing defects.
🌺 LOCALLY DESIGNED
Slow sustainable swimwear brands prioritize local in-house design. By planning drops in smaller quantities & making them available closer to the market, we have more control over the allocation process & can maintain a higher level of quality.
🌺 LIMITED + TINY BATCHES
Slow fashion embraces the concept of limited editions & small-batch production to avoid excessive waste & overproduction. By releasing designs in limited quantities, brands can focus on quality & exclusivity, ensuring that each piece is unique & special.

]]>When it comes to sustainable cheeky swimwear, not only are you making a fashion statement, but you're also contributing to a greener planet. These eco-friendly swimwear pieces are typically crafted from delicate recycled fabrics, requiring special care and attention to maintain their quality and longevity. In this blog post, we will provide you with essential maintenance tips and tricks to ensure your sustainable cheeky swimwear stays in excellent condition season after season.
Gentle Hand Washing
To preserve the delicate nature of your sustainable cheeky swimwear, it's best to wash it by hand. Fill a basin with cool water and add a small amount of mild, eco-friendly detergent. Gently agitate the swimwear in the water, ensuring all areas are cleaned. Avoid twisting or wringing the fabric, as it may cause stretching or damage.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Sustainable cheeky swimwear is made from recycled fabrics that are more sensitive to harsh chemicals. Avoid using bleach, fabric softeners, or harsh detergents, as they can weaken the fabric fibers and affect its color vibrancy. Opt for natural, eco-friendly detergent options to protect both your swimwear and the environment.
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Protecting your skin is important, but it's equally crucial to choose reef-safe sunscreens that won't harm marine life. Chemicals found in traditional sunscreens can cause damage to coral reefs and other aquatic ecosystems. Opt for mineral-based sunscreens that are free from oxybenzone and octinoxate. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before wearing your cheeky swimwear to allow it to fully absorb into your skin.
Minimize Exposure to Harsh Elements
To prolong the life of your sustainable cheeky swimwear, it's advisable to avoid exposure to harsh elements. Avoid direct contact with rough surfaces, such as pool edges or rocks, which can cause snags or tears. Additionally, refrain from using tanning oils, as they can stain and deteriorate the fabric. Opt for water-based or spray-on sunscreens instead.
Rinse Thoroughly After Each Use
After wearing your cheeky swimwear, rinse it thoroughly with cool water to remove saltwater, chlorine, or sand. This helps prevent any residue from building up and damaging the fabric. Gently squeeze out the excess water without wringing or twisting the garment.
Proper Storage
When storing your sustainable cheeky swimwear, ensure it is completely dry to prevent the growth of mold or mildew. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or damp environments. Fold the swimwear neatly and store it in a cool, dry place, such as a drawer or fabric bag, to protect it from dust and potential damage.
Caring for your sustainable cheeky swimwear not only extends its lifespan but also contributes to a more sustainable and eco-conscious lifestyle. By following these maintenance tips and tricks, you can enjoy your stylish swimwear for many seasons to come while minimizing your environmental impact. Remember, the little extra effort in caring for your swimwear goes a long way in preserving its quality and protecting our planet's natural resources.

]]>In recent years, Amazon has become a go-to platform for affordable fashion, including swimwear. While the convenience and low prices of Amazon swimwear dupes may seem tempting, it's important to consider the downsides. In this blog post, we will explore why Amazon swimwear dupes fall short in terms of quality, sustainability, and their impact on small businesses.
Poor Quality and Durability
One of the primary drawbacks of Amazon swimwear dupes is their subpar quality and durability. These inexpensive replicas often sacrifice quality materials and craftsmanship for affordability. As a result, the swimwear may not withstand the rigors of regular use, fading or stretching quickly. Flimsy straps, loose threads, and weak stitching are common issues with these dupes, leading to disappointment and a shorter lifespan. The swimsuits are also just plain ugly.
Lack of Sustainability
Sustainability is a growing concern in the fashion industry, and unfortunately, Amazon swimwear dupes often fail to meet eco-friendly standards. These replicas are typically made with cheap synthetic materials that lack sustainability features like recycled or regenerated fabrics. By opting for these products, we inadvertently contribute to the demand for fast fashion and the exploitation of natural resources.
Ethical Concerns and Small Business Impact
Many Amazon swimwear dupes are direct copies or imitations of designs created by independent designers and small businesses. This practice not only undermines the creativity and hard work of these entrepreneurs but also raises ethical concerns. Supporting original designers and small businesses fosters innovation and sustains the diversity of the swimwear industry, while purchasing dupes perpetuates a cycle of copying and discourages genuine creativity.
Planned Obsolescence
Planned obsolescence refers to the intentional design of products with a limited lifespan to encourage repeat purchases. Unfortunately, Amazon swimwear dupes often fall into this category. Their low-quality construction and materials are not built to last, driving consumers to replace their swimwear frequently. This contributes to a culture of overconsumption and waste, as discarded swimwear ends up in landfills.
Buyer Beware: Sizing and Fit Issues
Another common challenge with Amazon swimwear dupes is inconsistent sizing and fit. Without the ability to try on the swimwear beforehand, customers often face difficulties in finding the right size and style. Returns and exchanges can be time-consuming and frustrating, adding further inconvenience to the purchasing process.
While Amazon swimwear dupes may seem like a budget-friendly option, it's crucial to consider their drawbacks. From poor quality and lack of sustainability to ethical concerns and planned obsolescence, these replicas fall short compared to genuine, ethically-made swimwear. Supporting small businesses and prioritizing quality over cheap prices allows us to make more conscious choices that align with our values and contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry.

]]>Sustainability is an increasingly important consideration for consumers when choosing brands to support. However, not all brands that claim to be sustainable are actually making meaningful changes to reduce their environmental impact. In this blog post, we'll explore five key red flags that can help you determine if a brand is greenwashing, and provide tips on how to find brands that are truly committed to sustainability.
Here are some tips to make sure the brands you support are not greenwashing:
🪴 Vague claims: Be wary of companies that make misleading claims about their environmental impact or sustainability practices. For example, using phrases like "eco-friendly" or "sustainable" without providing any specific information to back it up.
🪴 Lack of transparency: If a brand is truly committed to sustainability, they should be clear about their practices and products. Look for information on their site about where their materials come from, how their products are made, and what steps they're taking to reduce their impact. You should be able to find this information very easily on a brand's sustainability page or their about page.
🪴 Changes: A brand that is truly committed to sustainability will take significant steps to reduce their environmental impact, such as using renewable energy, reducing waste, or implementing closed-loop production systems. If a brand is only making minimal changes or using eco-friendly materials for a small portion of their products, they're greenwashing.
🪴 Lack of third-party certifications: There are a number of third-party certifications that companies can obtain to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), or the Cradle to Cradle Certified program. If a brand claims to be sustainable but lacks any third-party certifications, this could be a red flag.
🪴 Internal Practices: The brand should encourage sustainable practices amongst its employees and members, such as growing their own food, using alternative modes of transportation, and shopping consciously.
By being aware of the red flags of greenwashing and taking the time to research brands and their sustainability practices, you can make more informed decisions about where to invest your money and support. Remember to look beyond flashy marketing claims and buzzwords, and seek out brands that are transparent, accountable, and genuinely committed to making a positive impact on the planet. By doing so, we can all work together to create a more sustainable future for ourselves and for generations to come.
]]>
🌳 Lower Carbon Footprint: By producing in small batches, there is less transportation required to move products, and this helps to reduce the carbon footprint of the brand.
🌳 Supporting Local Economies: Small batch production often means that products are designed locally, supporting local communities and reducing the need for majorly distanced shipping and transportation. I still walk to Bikini Bird & my other local retailers every time I drop off a wholesale order — reducing my personal time using gasoline is a high priority always.
🌳 High-Quality Production: Small batch production allows for more attention to detail and quality control. This means that products are made to a higher standard, with fewer defects or errors, and therefore have a longer lifespan. No planned obsolescence here ⭐️
🌳 Increased Transparency: Small batch production allows for greater transparency in the production process. I can share more information about where and how products are made, which hopefully builds trust with you and encourages more sustainable shopping habits.
Overall, small batch swimwear production can help to promote sustainability in the fashion industry by reducing waste, supporting local economies, and promoting transparency and high-quality production.
When it comes to buying swimwear, it can be tempting to opt for cheap, fast fashion brands that seem like a steal. However, these brands often use low-quality materials and plan for their products to become obsolete quickly, meaning that you'll need to replace them after just a few wears. On the other hand, sustainable bikini brands prioritize quality and longevity, making them a more affordable option in the long run.
Sustainable bikini brands use high-quality, eco-friendly materials that are designed to last. These materials may cost more upfront, but they're more durable and resistant to wear and tear, meaning they'll last longer than cheaply-made fast fashion swimsuits. Additionally, many sustainable bikini brands offer repair and recycling programs to help you get the most out of your purchase and reduce waste.
Moreover, sustainable bikini brands focus on classic designs and timeless styles that won't go out of fashion, meaning that you can wear them season after season. On the other hand, fast fashion brands often prioritize trends and may only offer designs that are in style for a season or two, leaving you with outdated swimwear that you won't want to wear again.
In the long run, investing in sustainable bikinis may actually save you money. While they may cost more upfront, they'll last longer and won't need to be replaced as often. Plus, when you consider the environmental impact of fast fashion and the waste it creates, choosing sustainable swimwear is a no-brainer.
In conclusion, sustainable bikinis are more affordable than fast fashion swimwear in the long run. By investing in high-quality, eco-friendly materials and timeless designs, sustainable bikini brands offer a more durable and stylish option that won't go out of fashion. So, if you're looking for swimwear that's both affordable and sustainable, consider investing in a quality, long-lasting sustainable bikini.
]]>Investing in a great quality bikini will save you a ton of money down the line. While it might seem exorbitant to spend $100 for one bikini top from a small business, your wallet & body will be thanking you later. Good quality swimsuits are important for swimming or other water activities for several reasons:
Comfort: Good quality swimsuits are made of materials that are designed to be comfortable and allow for a full range of movement, whether you're swimming laps, playing water sports, or simply lounging by the pool. They should fit well and not cause any irritation or chafing.
Durability: Swimming and other water activities can be hard on swimsuits, with exposure to chlorine, saltwater, and sun. A good quality swimsuit will be made of durable materials that can withstand these elements and last for many wears.
Functionality: Depending on the activity, you may need a swimsuit with specific features, such as extra support for swimming laps, a secure fit for surfing, or a high level of sun protection for outdoor activities. A good quality swimsuit will be designed with these features in mind.
Performance: If you're a competitive swimmer, a good quality swimsuit can make a significant difference in your performance. Swimwear that is designed specifically for competitive swimming can provide hydrodynamic benefits, reduce drag, and improve your speed and efficiency in the water.
Appearance: Finally, good quality swimsuits can simply look and feel better than cheap, poorly made options. They can be more flattering, boost your confidence, and make you feel great while enjoying your time in the water.
But, what are the traits of a good quality swimsuit you might ask? Here are our favorite features of a swimsuit that will last for so much longer than the rest.
High-Quality Materials: A durable swimsuit should be made of high-quality materials that can withstand exposure to chlorine, saltwater, and sun. Look for swimsuits made of materials like recycled polyester, nylon, or spandex blends, which are known for their durability.
Double Lining: Some swimsuits feature double lining for added durability and protection. This can also help to provide additional support and coverage.
Reinforced Seams: The seams of a swimsuit are a common area of wear and tear. Look for swimsuits with reinforced seams or double stitching, which can help to prevent the suit from falling apart.
Chlorine Resistance: Chlorine can be harsh on swimwear, causing colors to fade and materials to break down. Look for swimsuits that are labeled as chlorine-resistant, which are designed to withstand exposure to chlorine.
Sun Protection: Swimsuits with built-in sun protection can help to prevent damage from UV rays, which can cause fading and deterioration over time.
Proper Fit: A swimsuit that fits properly is less likely to experience excess wear and tear. Make sure to choose a swimsuit that fits snugly but comfortably, with enough support for your specific body type and activity level.
By looking for these qualities in a swimsuit, you can help to ensure that your swimwear lasts longer and remains in good condition, even after multiple wears and washes. Investing in a good quality swimsuit can make a big difference in your comfort, performance, and enjoyment of water activities. If you buy a bad quality bikini from places like Amazon, Shein, or other fast fashion, you may experience a few potential negative consequences:
Discomfort: Bad quality bikinis may not fit properly, provide adequate support, or be made of materials that are comfortable to wear. This can lead to discomfort, irritation, or chafing while wearing the bikini.
Poor durability: Bad quality bikinis may be made of low-quality materials that are prone to wear and tear, fading, or stretching out of shape. This can cause the bikini to lose its shape and fit, or even fall apart after just a few wears.
Inadequate coverage: Some bad quality bikinis may not provide adequate coverage, leading to unwanted exposure or wardrobe malfunctions.
Lack of support: Women identifying individuals with larger busts may need bikinis with more support, but bad quality bikinis may not provide the necessary support, leading to discomfort or even pain.
Unflattering appearance: Bad quality bikinis may not be designed to flatter your body type, and they may not fit well, leading to an unflattering appearance.
Overall, buying a bad quality bikini from fast fashion companies like Shein can be a waste of money and can cause discomfort, embarrassment, or other negative consequences. It's important to invest in a bikini that is made of high-quality materials, fits well, and is designed to meet your specific needs and preferences.
